Filling the Gaps with Long-Term Care Insurance: What Medicare and Medi-Cal Don’t Address

Stan Israel
President, Stan Israel Insurance Service

This course provides an overview of long-term care and the coverage gaps that exist within Medicare and Medi-Cal. Participants will learn what long-term care is, including the assistance required over an extended period of time with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, and continence, as well as Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) like housekeeping, transportation, shopping, and medication management. The course also reviews different levels of care—including custodial, intermediate, skilled care, and care related to cognitive impairment—and explains where long-term care services are typically received, such as at home, in assisted living facilities, adult day care centers, residential care facilities, and skilled nursing homes.

In addition, the course examines how long-term care is funded and the limitations of traditional programs. Participants will learn that Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans generally provide only short-term skilled care under specific conditions, while Medicaid (Medi-Cal) is primarily designed for individuals with limited income and resources. The program also explores alternative funding options such as personal assets, income, reverse mortgages, life settlements, and long-term care insurance. Finally, the course reviews current and projected annual costs of care using CareScout (Genworth) data, highlighting the increasing financial impact of long-term care and the importance of planning ahead.

Volatility Has Arrived

Bryce Gill
Economist, First Trust

This course explores the economic forces driving today’s market volatility and what they mean for investors, advisors, and the broader economy. Participants will examine the end of the Federal Reserve’s pandemic-era monetary policies, the implications of persistent inflation, and the potential for recession in an environment shaped by geopolitical uncertainty and supply-chain disruptions. The session provides a big-picture view of the U.S. economy, analyzing how rate cycles historically influence markets and what current conditions may signal for future economic growth and investment opportunities.

The course also evaluates several long-term structural trends shaping the economic landscape, including the reshoring of manufacturing, demographic shifts in the global workforce, changes in consumer spending patterns, and the evolving role of trade policy and tariffs. Participants will gain insight into the resilience of the U.S. economy, the importance of domestic consumption, and the factors influencing housing, credit markets, and the strength of the U.S. dollar. By connecting these macroeconomic themes, the program equips learners with a clearer framework for understanding volatility and identifying potential opportunities in an uncertain market environment.
