I am writing to ask for your help in defeating a piece of proposed legislation that will dramatically change the scope and nature of your independent financial planning practice or insurance agency.

The Protecting the Right to Organize, or PRO Act is legislation currently being proposed in Washington, D.C. that will change many advisors’ employment status from 1099/Independent Contractor to W-2 Employee. This change may dramatically affect your independence, client/account ownership, taxes and much more.

Professionally, I am an insurance agent just like you, and I am also proud to volunteer for the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) -California. NAIFA is the leading voice on behalf of independent agents on legislative and regulatory matters that affect our practices.

NAIFA is inviting all licensed insurance agents to participate in a virtual Congressional Conference May 25-26. This event is designed to help amplify our voices with our Federal legislators to amend this potentially devastating piece of legislation. Here is what attendees can expect from their participation:

• Tuesday 5/25 - Special Guest Speaker: Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), before his foray into politics, Senator Scott was a licensed insurance agent and is a learned voice in Congress for our profession.

• Be knowledgeable about pending legislation and show your clients and peers you are an engaged member of your profession.

• All at ZERO cost to you and ZERO travel time to Washington, D.C.!

This event marks the first time Non-NAIFA participants have been invited to attend our Congressional Conference. The threat to your independence is so great that we feel compelled to enlist the voices of all agents in California to ensure our role as a trusted, independent advisor remains intact.
